Overview

Adam Duckett, Editor of The Chemical Engineer, hosted a Q&A style session with three senior chemical and process engineers. They discussed how their careers have progressed, what they wish they knew then that they know now and what advice they would give to younger members in their early careers. Attendees were given the opportunity to submit questions to the panellists.

Panellists

Chris Hamlin, Co-Founder, HancockHamlin

Chris has more than 30 years of experience in the chemical engineering sector. He started his career at ICI as a control engineer and since then has worked for Huntsman, SABIC, Emerson Automation Solutions and Seeq Corporation. Chris is now a visiting professor at the University of Huddersfield and the co-founder and lead advisor at HancockHamlin, a research-based enablement, training and coaching company.

Nike Amiaka, Technical Professional Leader, KBR Inc.

Nike is a process safety and risk engineer with 23 years of experience working in oil and gas, renewables, private equity, railway, chemicals and pharmaceuticals. She is a Chartered Chemical Engineer; a Fellow of IChemE and she is currently studying to qualify as an occupational health and safety specialist as it compliments her process safety skills.

Nike is committed to mentoring early career engineers, return-to-work parents, minority ethnic groups and females. One of Nike’s mentees nicknamed her “Chief Happiness and Motivational Officer” because of her infectious energy and passion to see others achieve their personal and career goals.

George Mkushi, R&D Engineering Manager, C-Capture

George is R&D Engineering Manager for C-Capture, developers of next generation carbon capture technology.

He is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and a Chartered Waste Manager. During his career he has built and led multi-disciplinary teams and knows how to develop new technologies, manage teams, and deliver projects. As part of this he’s led several R&D projects and programmes. He has worked in three start-ups, one of which he co-founded and led from initial concept to the build up to a Series B funding round.

George’s passion is finding business solutions by combining market needs with innovation, particularly in the areas of decarbonisation, sustainable petrochemicals, biomass, or waste sectors, he is an expert in combustion technologies (pyrolysis, gasification, combustion, carbon capture), and energy efficiency.
