Material Resource Management and the Circular Economy

Topic Sustainable process engineering

CPD Hours 12

Online | Face-to-face | In-company

Overview

This course will help you understand how to better manage your material resources and reduce waste, making strides towards a circular economy within your organisation.

You will learn how to design better material flows to help your organisation become more sustainable in the way it manages its resources. The course considers internal material flows, and those of upstream and downstream supply networks, helping you to unlock opportunities for cleaner production, lower costs and improved raw material security.

The course will explore how implementing circular economy principles can lead to cost reduction, more efficient use of resources and risk mitigation. You will also learn how embracing circular economy practices can stimulate innovation in product design, manufacturing processes and business models.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you will gain an intermediate-level understanding of:

  • defining ‘waste’ across disciplines and scales
  • why resource management is important and how it contributes to sustainability
  • how to capture value – opportunities now and as future policies come into play
  • how to adjust your approach to engineering design to improve resource management
  • how to manage resources well, the tools available to help, and how to determine the right ones for your organisation.

Who will benefit

  • Chemical and process engineers
  • Researchers
  • Professionals from all production sectors who are working towards effective resource management and reduction of waste, both in developing strategies and in implementation

Course outline

  • Introduction to resource management in chemical engineering
  • Evolution of waste/resource management
  • Capturing value – moving from waste to resource
  • Designing out waste – one of the three pillars of a circular economy
  • Where are we now, where are we going and how are we getting there?
  • Course review and key learning points
