Gus Carroll is CEO & Co-Founder of Empirisys, a specialist company that combines cutting edge AI and data science techniques with deep expertise in process safety to help high hazard industries improve process safety and operational performance.
Gus has held key leadership roles in prominent energy companies, including Dow Chemicals, Spirit Energy and Centrica where, until 2020, he was Chief Engineer of this £30 billion FT100 energy company with responsibilities across its oil & gas, power, nuclear and industrial operations.
In 2020 Gus was invited by Dame Judith Hackitt to lead the development of a safety culture and leadership framework for the UK construction sector following the Grenfell Tower fire, based on the frameworks used across the oil & gas, chemicals and nuclear sectors. Embedding this framework remain a challenge!
Gus has a BEng and MSc in chemical engineering and an MBA. He is an IChemE Professional Process Safety Engineer, a chartered chemical engineer, a Fellow of the Energy Institute and a Fellow of the Institute of Chemical Engineers.
He is the winner of the prestigious Franklin Medal for process safety for 2023. He was previously a Director of the European Process Safety Centre and currently chairs the UK’s COMAH Strategic Forum, whose members comprise UK safety, environmental and nuclear regulators, senior industry leaders and government departments.
