Royal Charter and By-laws

IChemE was awarded a Royal Charter in 1957. A Royal Charter is an instrument of incorporation, granted by the Sovereign, which confers independent legal personality on an organisation and defines its objectives, constitution and powers to govern its own affairs.

IChemE’s Royal Charter and By-laws are the governing documents that define the Institution’s purpose, powers and duties. Over time, as the Institution’s activities and processes evolve, then so too must these key documents. The Royal Charter and By-laws are kept under continual review, to allow any necessary amendments to be brought forward on a regular basis.

At the Institution's Annual General Meeting (AGM), held on 11 June 2024, the special resolutions relating to the proposed amendments to the Royal Charter and By-laws were approved by the Voting Members.  The amendments were subsequently submitted to the Privy Council for their formal approval.

At a meeting of the Privy Council held on 2 October 2024 His Majesty The King approved an Order allowing the amendments to the Royal Charter and at the same meeting the Privy Council approved the amendments to the By-Laws.
