POPSIG-MPOC Northern Region University Roadshow at USM 2023

Overview
POPSIG-MPOC Palm Oil Educational Roadshow @ USM 2023 was organised by USM-Chemical Engineering Student Society (ChESS). The event was co-organised by Palm Oil Processing Special Interest Group (POPSIG), in conjunction with Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC).
Objectives
- To provide an understanding about the manufacturing process and the sustainable development in palm oil industry through a series of interactive events.
- To provide a platform to exchange views and suggestions between the students and the professionals.
- To provide an opportunity for the students to visit the industry to understand applications of the learned knowledge.
- To deliver about the latest technological development in palm oil industry to address sustainability during the roundtable discussion.
- To understand the contributions of palm oil industry to the UN SDGs.
- To identify the ESG challenges, opportunities and contributions from the Malaysian palm oil industry.
- To understand sustainable palm oil processing in industry.

Director Chong Yong Sheng, Director, POPSIG-MPOC Palm Oil Educational Roadshow @ USM 2023, USM-Chemical Engineering Student Society 2023
Mr Chong appreciated the committee members, speakers, collaborators, guests and participants to this event. He hoped all attendees could gain the knowledge and insight shared by the experts in palm oil industry. He encouraged the participants to create a more sustainable and innovative future for palm oil industry from chemical engineering aspects.
Technical presentations
Mr Anthony Veerayan, Environment Manager, Science, Environment and Sustainability Division, Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC)
Mr Anthony highlighted that the Malaysian palm oil industry is committed towards economic development, elevating poverty, environmental protection and sustainable practices.
Ms Amni Syazana Azahar, Executive, Technical Outreach and Extension Service Unit, Malaysian Palm Oil Certification Council (MPOCC)
Ms Amni shared that MSPO is responsible to social, health, safety and employment condition.
Ts Dr Mohd Sharizan Md Sarip, Senior Lecturer, Universiti Malaysia Perlis (UNIMAP)
Ts Dr Sharizan highlighted that the new process improvement was needed to venture for yield improvement and quality enrichment. Advanced separation process (hot compressed water extraction, supercritical CO2, subcritical R134, enzymatic assisted extraction) may contribute to better extraction process.
Teh Tarik session
Mr Anthony Veerayan (MPOC), Ms Amni Syazana Azahar (MPOCC), Ts Dr Mohd Sharizan Md Sarip (UNIMAP) and Dr Nik Muhammad Azhar Bin Nik Daud (UNIMAP) joined the panel to share the opinions and suggestions to the students. The session was moderated by Mr Anthony.
