Overview
This talk will give a brief explanation of the IOI Edible Oils (Sandakan Refinery) operations and layout before it explains about the energy savings initiative undertaken. The Vent Economizer proposal was selected as IChemE’s 2018 Award winner for the Palm Oil Industry category. This presentation will explain how the idea was mooted. It will show what the previous arrangement was, and how it was modified, and the savings obtained from it.

Ir. Shyam Lakshmanan
Shyam Lakshmanan is the General Manager at IOI Edible Oils Sdn Bhd and has more than 30 years of experience in various sectors. He started his working life in the edible oils industry. He then moved to the chemical industry and has experience managing several plants around West Malaysia. He has also had project experience, having designed and built mineral processing plants in Huangshan, China and in Medan, Indonesia. His international exposure also involved handling mining operations and mineral processing operations in India and Australia.
After 24 years in various other industries, Shyam has returned to the Palm Oil Industry. He is currently managing an edible oil refining complex in Sandakan, Sabah. Some of the more recent developments here are the installation of dust plants for the Kernel Crushing Plants, a new biomass fired cogeneration plant and the commissioning of a modified CPO washing process for 3MCPDe and GE mitigation.
Shyam is passionate about the environment and conducts research on pollution prevention and has several papers published in indexed journals. Various efforts have been undertaken in the plant to reduce pollution and to reduce resource consumption, and one of these has emerged as the winner in the IChemE Awards.
On top of that, Shyam is a Certified Energy Manager, and a First Grade Steam Engineer.
