Overview

Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) has emerged as a pivotal energy source due to its cost-effectiveness, cleaner combustion properties, and ease of transportation. This presentation focuses on the liquefaction technology used in PETRONAS LNG facilities and highlights innovative breakthroughs that support decarbonisation, as well as enhancing plant performance monitoring and optimisation.

There is various liquefaction technologies used in PETRONAS LNG facilities. Design considerations for choosing the technologies will be discussed, covering advancement of technology such as floating LNG to monetise stranded gas fields and boil off gas re-liquefaction to recover flare gas into valuable products. Looking towards the future, there are potential decarbonisation options that will be discussed which include capturing and utilising CO2 from Acid Gas Removal Units (AGRU), as well as electrification which is transitioning from gas turbine-driven technology to motor-driven systems.

Breakthroughs in optimisation will be highlighted, focusing on digital predictive control aiming on plant optimisation and energy efficiency improvement. Various approaches can be considered, such as enhancements of plant monitoring tools via combining real time plant data with first principal models, utilisation of machine learning to predict and prescribe the most optimal operation regime as well as fuel gas consumption optimisation that will minimise flaring and ultimately reducing GHG emission.
