Steve spent 30 years working for oil and gas major BP in various technical and leadership positions, ultimately becoming BP Group Head of Risk Learning and Health Safety Security and Environment (HSSE). This involved playing an instrumental role in the responses and subsequent fundamental changes across the company following the Texas City Refinery fire and explosion in 2005 and Deepwater Horizon incident in 2010. Prior to that he worked in research and development, operational, engineering and projects roles in UK North Sea and Gulf of Mexico and corporate roles, such as head of HSE for BP Upstream and in corporate planning.

Since retiring from BP at the end of 2014, Steve has been an independent advisor to the board ESH committee of a UK manufacturing company and has promoted improved performance in oil and gas industry environmental performance as a Senior Associate with the global trade association IPEICA. He has also undertaken various independent consulting, training, and auditing roles across oil and gas, chemicals, nuclear and defence sectors.

Steve graduated with Bachelors, Masters and PhD degrees from the University of Manchester and he is a Fellow of the IChemE and a member of the Learned Society Committee.
