Overview

Dow and X-energy are working together on a project on project to deliver safe, reliable, zero carbon emissions power and steam from advanced small modular nuclear reactors to a U.S.-based Dow manufacturing site. The project is part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program Cooperative Agreement, which is designed to help bring advanced nuclear technology to the U.S. Dow’s Mark Feltner and X-energy’s Thomas Nixon will discuss the opportunities and challenges aligned with this first-of-its kind industrial use of advanced nuclear.

Mark Feltner, Senior Nuclear Technical Manager, DOW

Mark Feltner is the Senior Nuclear Technology Manager for The Dow Chemical Company. He is responsible for integrating the use of nuclear technology to supply steam and electrical power to Dow’s petrochemical facilities to reduce CO2 emissions. Mark has over 40 years experience in the commercial nuclear power industry. He held a Senior Reactor Operator’s license for River Bend Station and several managerial positions, including Operations, Refueling, Work Management and Outage. Mark holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Cincinnati.

Thomas Nixon,Senior Vice President, Reactor Division, X-energy

Thomas Nixon is Senior Vice President, Reactors, oversees engineering, licensing, procurement, supply chain, training, construction, operations and maintenance, and innovation activities for X-energy’s Xe-100 advanced small nuclear reactor, micro-reactor, and nuclear propulsion. His teams work to prepare X-energy’s technology for the market. A well-seasoned engineer himself, Thomas brings decades of experience in the civil field. Thomas spent more than 30 years at Bechtel Group where he started as a civil engineer and worked his way through various leadership positions. During his time at Bechtel, he was responsible for directing and delivering some of the most visible and critical nuclear construction projects in recent history. Most notably, he oversaw a team that was responsible for developing the first advanced nuclear reactor. After leaving Bechtel, Thomas led Google’s global data center expansion strategy, giving Thomas a firm grasp on the international and technology space that X-Energy operates in. Thomas holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Michigan State University. He is a licensed professional engineer.
