- Location Online: 09:00 BST. Duration 1 hour
Overview
Join us for an engaging exploration of the latest advancements in electrochemical cells for modern mineral refining, with a special focus on emissions-free ironmaking. This webinar will showcase key developments in electrochemical technologies that aim to revolutionize the ironmaking process by reducing emissions and enhancing efficiency, paving the way for a more sustainable ironmaking mining and mineral process industry.
We will dive into advanced alkaline water electrolysis for green hydrogen production and the ion transfer kinetics at electrified interfaces. We'll also discuss the broader implications of these technologies, including how insights from ironmaking can be applied to refining critical minerals and copper. This holistic approach highlights the interconnectedness of various metal refining processes and extends the relevance of the research.
Speaker
Paul Kempler, Assistant Professor, University of Oregon
Prof. Paul Kempler is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry and the Director of the Electrochemistry Master’s Internship Program (EMIP) at the University of Oregon. There, he leads a team developing electrochemical cells for emissions-free ironmaking and studying the fundamentals of metal oxide conversion reactions. His other research interests include advanced alkaline water electrolysis for green hydrogen production and fundamental studies of ion transfer kinetics at electrified interfaces and he is the lead for industry partnerships for the Center for Interfacial Ionics. He received the UO Sustainability Award for Research and Scholarship in 2023.
