Overview

Teaching ethics and ethical responsibility to chemical engineering students is important but challenging. It is important because chemistry has a huge impact on society, culture and the environment. Challenging because the language of chemistry is very different from the language of ethics.

In this webinar, Tom Børsen shares his experiences with teaching ethics and ethical responsibility to students of chemical engineering, maps the landscape of engineering ethics education and presents his new book “Ethics of Chemistry: From Poison Gas to Climate Engineering” edited with Joachim Schummer that is intended to fill a need for teaching materials in chemistry engineering ethics.

This webinar will be of great interest to educators and trainers, with a main focus on the ones who include ethics elements in their teaching.

Speaker

Tom Børsen, Associate Professor, Aalborg University

Tom is trained as a chemist and now an Associate Professor at Aalborg University, where he is a member of the research group in Techno-Anthropology and Participation (TAPAR). He serves on the board of the think tank: Techno-Ethics.

His research clusters around four aspects of Responsible Innovation: Teaching Responsibility in STEM, Ethical Technology Assessment, Robust Technologies through Action Research, Interdisciplinary Policy Advice on Technological Risks. He teaches many of these aspects at the Bachelor and Master’s of Science programs in Techno-Anthropology, which he co-founded in 2011.
