Overview
Dr Heywood has been involved in the measurement of and applications for fluid rheology to process engineering applications since 1973. His talk on general aspects of fluid rheology will cover the definition of rheology and viscosity, Newtonian vs. non-Newtonian behaviour, whether information on fluid viscosity is always needed for fluid flow design, and how to measure flow curves (rheograms) under the correct test conditions for given applications. In addition, other rheological properties will be covered including yield stress, time-dependent properties (eg thixotropy), and some interesting phenomena associated with viscoelasticity.
Speaker
Nigel Heywood, Engineering Consultant, Framatome Ltd
Nigel is a Chartered Chemical Engineer and an IChemE Fellow, with a first class honours degree in chemical engineering, an MSc with distinction in advanced chemical engineering, an executive MBA and DIC from Imperial College, and a PhD from the University of Wales. He researched multiphase pipeflow at Toronto University, Canada and has worked at Warren Spring Laboratory, AEA Technology, Hyprotech, Aspen Technology, BHR Group and now Framatome Ltd, where he provides consultancy, research and training. He has written over 300 journal and conference papers, confidential client reports, and co-edited a book on “Slurry Handling: Design of Solid-Liquid Systems”. His particular interest is in the measurement of rheological properties for process engineering applications.
