Overview

The representation of women in the energy industry is essential for fostering innovation, improving workplace inclusivity, and addressing the industry's need for skilled talent. Diverse perspectives lead to more effective problem-solving and creative solutions, particularly as the sector transitions toward cleaner energy. Visibility of women leaders helps attract future talent by breaking stereotypes and offering relatable role models. Moreover, inclusive environments boost retention and employee engagement, contributing to better performance.

The Flipping the Barrel podcast, co-founded by Massiel Diez and Jamie Elrod, plays a pivotal role in advancing this mission, particularly within the community of women in energy. Through storytelling and interviews, the podcast provides a platform for women to share their career journeys, challenges, and triumphs in a traditionally male-dominated field. By highlighting personal stories, it creates visibility for women professionals, inspires the next generation, and shifts perceptions around the inclusivity of the energy sector. The podcast fosters a sense of belonging and empowerment, encouraging both men and women to champion diversity and build collaborative and inclusive workspace.

Speaker

Massiel Diez, Production Systems Internal and Executive Communication Manager, SLB

Massiel is a chemical engineer from McGill University, Canada who started her career as a wireline engineer with SLB. Over time, her passion for the industry and commitment to sharing her experiences led her to build a significant online following, where she became known as the "Oilfield Girl". In 2019, Massiel transitioned from fieldwork into a sales and entrepreneurial role, co-founding Flipping the Barrel, a popular podcast with Jamie Elrod.

This podcast shines a light on the stories of industry professionals, particularly women, with a focus on fostering inclusion and breaking stereotypes in oil and gas. Through these efforts, Massiel hopes to inspire young women and men to pursue energy careers, showing that the industry can be both supportive and transformative.
