Overview

With power generation accounting for approximately 70% of total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the oil and gas industry, it is evident that measures to decarbonise offshore power generation will be required to meet the emission reduction targets outlined in the North Sea Transition Deal (NSTD). Electrification of offshore assets is viewed as a key move for abating the emissions associated with offshore power generation. Assets located in clusters and close to the shore are the most suitable candidates for electrification. However, within the UK Continental Shelf (UKCS), there are several isolated assets situated far from the shore where electrification is not a feasible option for decarbonising power generation. For these assets an alternative method to decarbonise power generation is required. Alternative fuels can provide that method. A wide range of fuels are being considered by several industries to help them decarbonise, with new targets being set by governments around the world for the use of alternative fuels.

Options for both carbon neutral and zero carbon fuels are being developed, with equipment manufacturers investigating retrofit and new build solutions so that the benefits of these fuels can be realised. While the availability and cost of these fuels remain challenging, their increasing uptake and growing availability of renewable energy sources will contribute to making them a realistic option for decarbonising power generation within the O&G sector.

Calum Westland, Engineer, Apollo

Calum is a consultant at Apollo with much of his work covering sustainable energy and the energy transition centred around the application of technologies to solve clients’ problems. He has experience in vendor and OEM engagement as well as market engagement and research. Calum has experience in providing support on several projects including the development of a hydrogen backbone, long-term energy storage coupled with power-to-X, and alternative fuels, looking at low carbon solutions and technologies.
