Presidential Blog: Congratulations to newly elected Fellows

21st February 2025
The latest thoughts and updates from IChemE President Mark Apsey MBE.
Firstly, I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to IChemE’s newly elected Fellows, including our CEO, Yvonne Baker! Achieving fellowship is a prestigious milestone that recognises your seniority and your significant and demonstrable contribution to chemical, biochemical and process engineering. IChemE Fellows represent the pinnacle of professional recognition, and I encourage all our members to consider and plan for their own professional goals, whatever they may be.
I had the pleasure of hosting a round table on Cyber Security on the 28 January at the Society of Operations Engineers in London. It was an insightful discussion that brought together security experts and engineers from across our diverse sector. We delved into the critical question: how can we leverage the latest technology without compromising our operational control systems? and much insightful discussion followed. The main theme of the conversation was the cybersecurity challenges posed by the human component of any system - both from gaps in skills and knowledge, but also from complacency and from an "it could never happen to us" attitude. It also touched on a number of other topics such as the risks and opportunities of integrating new IT approaches with industrial systems that are often created in earlier technological eras; and the importance of physical and supply chain security to cybersecurity. And most importantly, we started to talk about what role IChemE might play in addressing these challenges.
Next comes an important reminder to all members: nominations are open for the Board of Trustees and Congress elections. The deadline for submissions is the 4 March. Don't miss this opportunity to shape the future of our institution.
I’d also like to draw your attention to our Member Groups and Special Interest Groups which are a wonderful example of collaboration; bringing together members from around the world who share common expertise and interests to learn, network and share best practice. IChemE members can join these groups free of charge and I encourage you all to engage, they truly are a brilliant professional resource for us all.
Another new and exciting professional learning initiative launched for members last month and is being run in association with patent and trademark attorneys, Beck Greener. This comprehensive CPD series offers invaluable insights into Intellectual Property (IP). With expert guidance from top IP professionals, real-world case studies, and practical strategies, members will gain the knowledge needed to protect their innovations and navigate the complexities of IP with confidence.
Our membership is truly fantastic. I am privileged to participate in many IChemE events, and I am always struck by the richness of conversation, kindness, and inclusivity we display towards each other. In an uncertain and increasingly polarized world, it is reassuring to be part of our great community. Thank you for making IChemE a beacon of collaboration and support.
