IChemE in Numbers: a 2017 round-up
22nd December 2017
Remember, our Annual Review is published in May 2018 - giving a comprehensive overview of IChemE's 2017 activities and achievements. Check out the Annual Review archive here.
We look forward to working with you in 2018. If you are a volunteer, thank you for your support. If you have engaged with us, if you have attended our events, if you have joined the conversation via this blog or social media - thanks for helping us to advance chemical engineering worldwide.
Season's Greetings and best wishes for 2018.
- New University accreditation, providing a pathway to getting Chartered.
IChemE is committed to developing and raising standards in chemical engineering education. Congratulations to the University departments who were accredited, or re-accredited this year, and a big thank you to the volunteers who helped make this happen.
2. 15 companies gained (or re-gained) IChemE Accredited Company Training Scheme (ACTS) this year.
ACTS facilitates graduate trainees in their application for Chartered Chemical Engineer status (MIChemE). Thanks to all these companies for investing in the next generation of chemical engineers.
3. More volunteers, more Chartered Chemical Engineers
Assessment of every application for Chartered Chemical Engineer (MIChemE) is done by experienced, volunteer Chartered Members and Fellows. Thank you to each and every person who has dedicated their own time to supporting this peer-review process.
4. More companies demonstrating a sustained commitment to the process industries
We were delighted to announce four new Gold Corporate Partners, and four new Bronze Corporate Partners in 2017. Covering a range of sectors, these companies have shown that they are committed to the professional development of their engineers.

5. Recognising achievement and excellence in chemical engineering
Our IChemE Awards programme went from strength to strength this year, and a total of 30 Awards were presented in Malaysia, Singapore and the UK.
Check out our highlights video below. We will also launch our IChemE Global Awards 2017 - Meet The Winners videos in January, a great opportunity to hear from the winners in each category about their projects.
6. A very special birthday
Happy 30th Birthday to our Water Special Interest Group! What a brilliant year they've had, with two stand-out initiatives.
First up, its Young Process Engineer Prize which was generously sponsored by Arup. Aimed at engaging young minds in the water chemical engineering community, the winners received a £1,000 prize. Find out more about the winners here, and watch their video submissions here.
They have also launched a charity appeal in partnership with charity: water, which looks to raise £7,500 for a BioSands Filters project in Cambodia - a country where only half the rural population has access to clean water. The appeal was the 2017 recipient of IChemE's annual charitable donation, in lieu of greetings cards.
What's more, in a new development, the generous people at Aqueum have agreed to match any donation from now until 30th December pound for pound. Why not give the gift of clean water this Christmas? Learn more about the appeal and donate here.
7. Current earning trends - does yours stack up?
Every year we compile data from hundreds of members on salaries. The full report is usually a paid-for document retailing at around £199. This year we wanted UK chemical engineers to be able to benchmark salaries quickly and easily, and therefore launched the 2017 Salary Survey Report as a free download.
If you are based in the UK or Australia, you can also ask our Salary Calculator specific queries based on your job title, location etc here.
That concludes our round-up for 2017. You can check out all our past new stories over on the IChemE Media Centre, and don't forget to give your input on IChemE's book back-catalogue here. Have a fantastic break with your loved ones. See you in 2018.
