Frequently asked questions
Got a question? Our frequently asked questions below will help you answer many of these.
If you cannot find the answer you're looking for, our dedicated support team will be able to help you. You can contact us on mentoring@icheme.org.
How can I become a mentor?
See become a mentor for information on the different mentor roles available.
Where can I find a mentor?
Many companies will encourage this kind of support and will link individuals with a senior staff mentor. It is an obligatory commitment of all companies with IChemE Accredited Company Training Schemes (ACTS) to provide trainees with a mentor.
If you don't have access to a mentor through your company or if you are looking for an outside perspective; IChemE has a network of volunteer members willing to support other members towards IChemE Chartered membership. We also have mentors happy to assist other members towards other career goals, or to offer advice and support. Read more about our new Mentor Match.
What if I don't have a mentor but I'm ready to apply for Chartered membership?
Even if you feel that you don't need a mentor during your training, or are already fully experienced and simply need to write your Competence and Commitment (C&C) Report, it can still be valuable to seek out at least one or two informal reviews of your C&C report before submitting it as part of your application. An external viewpoint can help ensure that you're presenting your experience in the best possible way.
Can my mentor act as a referee?
You will need to provide the details of two referees for a reference in support of your application for Chartered Member. Referees should have known you for at least a year before you apply for Stage 3 - Professional Review.
If you don’t know any IChemE Chartered Members or Fellows to support your application, an IChemE mentor may be able to support your progress to membership and provide you with a suitable reference. For more information, contact mentoring@icheme.org.
