Oil and Natural Gas Subject Group sparks interest in Malaysia
23rd August 2011
A recent member survey has confirmed a strong demand for technical activities in Malaysia. The poll, conducted by IChemE, was commissioned to gain a deeper understanding of the needs of Malaysian chemical engineers.
Malaysia enjoyed a 49% growth in membership last year and as a result the Institution surveyed members based in this area to ascertain the expectations for technical communities in the region.
10% of IChemE’s membership in the country took part in the consultation and respondents were asked to select the subject groups of most interest to them. Oil & Natural Gas (SONG) was the clear winner, followed by Environment, Safety & Loss Prevention, Energy Conversion Technology, and Process Management & Control. One-day seminars, site visits and online presentations or ‘webinars’ came out as the most popular formats of delivery for events.
Johan Samad, Chair of IChemE in Malaysia, welcomed the survey results: 'Thanks to everyone who took part in the survey, and particularly the 100 people who volunteered to assist with organising new subject group activities in Malaysia. We’ll be following up on their generous offers of help.
'The launch event for the Oil & Natural Gas Subject Group (SONG) in Malaysia will take place in Kuala Lumpur ahead of the inaugural Hazards Asia Pacific conference on 26 September,' says Samad.
