New on-demand sustainability course free for IChemE members
3rd February 2025
IChemE has published a new Effective Cleaning in Food Systems on-demand training course as part of its Sustainability Hub.
The course is free to IChemE members and will help registrants better understand the need for an integrated, whole-of-process approach to cleaning system design and operation. It covers the risks of failure in cleaning systems effectiveness, the external impact of cleaning processes, and how design and cleaning in place (CIP) processes can deliver safer outcomes in the food and pharmaceutical sectors.
Trish Melton, Chair of the IChemE Sustainability Hub, says the course will be of particular interest to early career engineers, students and those transitioning to work in the food industry:
“I’m thrilled that we are releasing this new course as part of the Sustainability Hub. UN Sustainable Development Goal 3 focusses on challenges to global health and understanding how to reduce spoilage in the food sector is a vital to achieving this, as well as to reducing waste. As chemical engineers working in the food and water industries, we can make a difference by working throughout the product lifecycle to develop robust processes.”
The course was developed by David Platts, a member of the Sustainability Hub Technical Advisory Group. David is a semi-retired consultant engineer with extensive experience in food manufacturing process design and projecting in the dairy industry.
To access this free member benefit, IChemE members can find the free registration code on IChemE Connect in the announcements section, in the course launch email sent on 3 January, or by contacting membersupport@icheme.org.
The course is also available to non-members for £150.00 + VAT and on a company license/multi-user basis.
Other Sustainability Hub courses include:
- An Introduction to Sustainability
- Circular Economy for Chemical Engineers
- Ethical Decision-Making for Chemical Engineers
- Food Structures for a Sustainable World
- Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for Chemical Engineers
- Sustainable Process Integration for Cleaner Process Design
- The Human Water Cycle: Water and Wastewater Treatment and Reuse
All Sustainability Hub courses are free to IChemE members.
The Sustainability Hub’s purpose is to deliver a sustainability knowledge resource for IChemE members and the broader community.
What is chemical engineering?
Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
IChemE
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.
We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
