New IChemE Awards for Young Engineers

New IChemE Awards for Young Engineers

6th March 2024

IChemE is inviting young chemical engineers to take part in the first-ever IChemE Young Engineers Awards for Innovation and Sustainability (YEAIS).

The UK-only pilot event, which is dedicated to recognising new and emerging talent across chemical and process engineering, is open to UK-based IChemE members aged 18-25 and will celebrate the ideas and innovations of student and early-career chemical engineers from a range of backgrounds and industries.

Inspired by our mission to work together to make an impact and contribute positively to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the awards will be contested over three categories (undergraduate or equivalent, postgraduate or equivalent, and early career), with applicants required to submit a poster entry that describes how they can help us to address one of the following Priority Topics:

  • Clean Energy and Climate Action
  • Water and Sanitation
  • Food, Health and Wellbeing
  • Responsible Production, Innovation and Industry
  • Quality Education, including Lifelong Learning
  • Process Safety, including Major Hazards Management
  • Digitalisation, including Cybersecurity

A response to the UN’s SDGs and an integral part of IChemE’s Strategy 28+, these Priority Topics have been identified by the Learned Society Committee as the areas in which chemical and process engineers are most valuable, and best placed to use their skills, knowledge and experience to help engineer a more sustainable world.

Jo Cox, IChemE Head of Young People’s & Student Engagement, said: “As an Institution, it is our mission to highlight the crucial role that chemical and process engineers of all ages can play in helping to materially impact the world’s major challenges. The inaugural Young Engineers Awards for Innovation and Sustainability is a fantastic opportunity for the younger members of our profession to put forward their ideas on how we can address these Priority Topics and develop practical solutions for the benefit of society.”

The deadline for entries to the IChemE Young Engineers Awards for Innovation and Sustainability is 18 April 2024, with the winners announced at IChemE Head Office, Rugby, UK on June 28 2024. You can find out more or submit your entry by visiting our dedicated awards page. If you would like to be involved in the judging process, please email yeais@icheme.org for more information.

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

IChemE

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.

We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
