IChemE Safety Centre Celebrates 11 Years of Driving Process Safety Excellence
18th December 2024
Discover how the IChemE Safety Centre (ISC) has transformed process safety worldwide over the past decade in its newly released Annual Report. From pioneering a shared approach to safety across industries to fostering a global network of partners, the report provides key insights into the progress and future of process safety leadership.
Since its inception in January 2014, the IChemE Safety Centre has grown from six visionary founding partners to a thriving global network of 59 operating and industry partners, as well as 56 academic, government, and supporting collaborators. The IChemE Safety Centre was established with an ambitious goal: to redefine process safety through leadership in six critical areas—knowledge and competence, systems and procedures, human factors, engineering and design, assurance, and culture.
Guided by the principle of “sharing for safety,” the IChemE Safety Centre has broken down industry silos, fostering collaboration to drive improvements across sectors and throughout the lifecycle of business operations. The Annual Report celebrates the collective achievements of its members and highlights the values and behaviours that have underpinned its success over the past decade. The IChemE Safety Centre’s collaborative approach underscores a shared belief: safety is everyone’s responsibility, and together we can create safer processes and workplaces for all.
IChemE thanks the inaugural Director, Trish Kerin, for her tremendous achievement in putting the IChemE Safety Centre on the map and wishes her all the best as she prepares for new adventures. We welcome Interim Director, Deb Grubbe, and look forward to recruiting a worthy successor to Trish in early 2025, reaffirming our commitment to advancing process and systems safety for the benefit of all. IChemE invites organisations to join the IChemE Safety Centre’s growing network, championing the vision of engineering a safer and sustainable world.
The Annual Report is now available online, offering a comprehensive look at the ISC’s achievements and its aspirations for the future.

What is chemical engineering?
Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.
IChemE
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.
We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
