2024 Ashok Kumar Fellowship awardee eager to support POST's role in serving the UK Parliament

4th February 2025

IChemE and the Materials Processing Institute (MPI) are pleased to announce the appointment of Joseph (Joe) Greaves as the 2024 Ashok Kumar Fellow.

The Ashok Kumar Fellowship, offered in partnership with the UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology (POST), presents an exceptional opportunity for an early-career researcher to engage directly with policymakers in both Houses of Parliament. This unique fellowship enables the selected candidate to develop critical briefing materials on emerging scientific topics, providing invaluable experience in how research evidence informs decision-making processes.

Joe Greaves, who graduated from The University of Sheffield, UK with a first-class master’s degree in chemical engineering, said: “I am extremely grateful to have been awarded the Ashok Kumar Fellowship for 2024, and to be given the opportunity to contribute to the UK Parliament’s dialogue on science and technology.

Yvonne Baker, IChemE CEO, said: “I would like to extend congratulations to Joe. The Ashok Kumar Fellowship aims to empower researchers by providing them with a platform to influence policy through scientific evidence. By collaborating with POST, Joe will enhance his understanding of Parliamentary processes and contribute to the development of policies informed by the latest scientific advancements. This fellowship underscores the vital role that expert-informed research plays in supporting Parliamentarians in their efforts to create a bright future for the United Kingdom.”

Terry Walsh, Materials Processing Institute CEO, said: “We are delighted to continue to support the Ashok Kumar Fellowship in partnership with POST and IChemE and congratulations to Joe on being selected. Topics researched as part of this fellowship are of scientific importance and chosen to benefit UK Parliament by supporting informed debate, discussion, and decision-making among parliamentarians. Joe proved to be an outstanding candidate during the selection process, and he will make an outstanding contribution during this fellowship, with guidance and support from POST.”

Lydia Harriss, Senior Physical Sciences Adviser, and International Lead at POST, said: “We’re really pleased to have awarded Joe the 2024 Fellowship, and are very much looking forward to him joining the team. Our Ashok Kumar Fellows make a significant contribution to POST’s work of supporting parliamentary debate and scrutiny. In recent years they have tackled diverse topics including: data science skills, cyber operations, chemical weapons, and the fire safety of construction products. The Fellowship offers a unique opportunity to develop research, analysis and communication skills, and former POST Fellows have used the experience as a springboard to varied careers across public policy, academia, industry and beyond.”

What is chemical engineering?

Chemical, biochemical and process engineering is the application of science, mathematics and economics in the process of turning raw materials into everyday, and more specialist, products. Professional chemical engineers design, construct and manage process operations all over the world. Energy, pharmaceuticals, food and drink, synthetic fibres and clean drinking water are just some of the industry sectors and products where chemical engineering plays a central role.

IChemE

The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) advances chemical engineering's contribution for the benefit of society. We facilitate the development of chemical engineering professionals and provide connections to a powerful network of around 30,000 members in more than 100 countries.

We support our members in applying their expertise and experience to make an influential contribution to solving major global challenges, and are the only organisation permitted to award Chartered Chemical Engineer status and Professional Process Safety Engineer registration.
